REMINDER: Hurricane season is upon us and though I am hopeful this will be a calm season, you just never know.  Please make sure and stop by your local city hall to pick up hurricane stickers for your vehicles.  If  a mandatory evacuation does occur, you will not be allowed back to the area unless you have this sticker.

Cleaning a Convection Oven

Convection ovens are not the same as standard ovens. They operate in a unique way that makes them particularly desirable to some people. Convection ovens heat food differently, circulating hot air with fans inside that allow the food to cook at a lower temperature but still as effectively as a regular oven. Since fans move the air around the oven during cooking, food heats more evenly.

Just like standard ovens some convection ovens are self-cleaning. If your convection oven is self-cleaning, just run the self-cleaning process and, when done, wipe away spills easily with a washcloth or sponge. If you do need to clean your oven by hand, however, follow this process in order to get the oven looking its best.

  1. Remove oven racks. Take out the racks in the convection oven and place them to the side. You will wash them off later, outside of the oven.
  2. Use an oven-cleaning product. Apply an oven cleaner to the interior of the convection oven, being careful to follow the specific instructions on the container. It is a good idea to wear gloves since most oven cleaners have chemicals and are harsh on skin, although you may be able to find a natural cleaner as an alternative. Get the cleaner all over every part of the interior, then let the cleaner sit if needed.
  3. Scrub away spills. As directed by the oven-cleaning product you have chosen to use, scrub and wipe away the cleaner after it has sat for the correct amount of time. Scrub at trouble spots with a cleaning brush or washcloth. Wipe away residue from the cleaner when you are done. If you encounter any spots that are too stuck-on to remove easily, place a wet cloth over the spill so that it can be loosened enough to remove. It should now wipe off without much trouble.
  4. 4. Wash oven racks. Using water and some soap, thoroughly wash off the racks. Give them a good scrub with a sponge or washcloth. Sometimes spills from food collect on the racks and get just as stuck on as they would in the bottom of the oven. Let the racks air dry or wipe with a dry cloth. Once the interior of the convection oven is clean, replace the oven racks.

Of course, the best way to keep your convection oven clean is prevention. Be sure to wipe up spills as soon as they happen instead of letting them become more cooked on and stubborn over time.
